What determines the cost of an AMR project?

A dependable budget starts with the workflow. The vehicle is one part of the payload, configuration, integration and deployment scope.

Budget the whole operating system, not a bare robot.

AMR projects are quoted around a specific material flow. A credible scope makes clear what is included, what is assumed and how the deployment will be accepted. This guide intentionally does not publish a universal price or payback promise: those figures vary with the site, load, interfaces and operating plan.

Inputs for a useful budgetary quote

  • Load weight, dimensions, carrier type and pickup/drop-off method.
  • Route drawings or video, travel distance, aisle widths, slopes, doors and lifts.
  • Trips by shift, peak demand, service-time expectation and staffing model.
  • Existing WMS, MES, ERP, conveyor, door, elevator and network requirements.
  • Pedestrian interaction, safety zones, emergency procedures and acceptance criteria.

Payload and robot size

The payload, carrier dimensions, centre of gravity and floor conditions determine the platform and safety margin needed for the work.

Top module and load carrier

Flat-top, lifting, conveyor, rack-lifting and custom interfaces change both the mechanical design and the controls needed at each handoff.

Fleet size and traffic complexity

A single, stable route has different software, charging and validation needs from a fleet that shares intersections, lifts and mixed traffic.

Charging approach

Charging windows, route length, shift coverage and battery strategy affect the number of robots and stations required.

WMS, MES or ERP integration

The systems that create tasks, receive status and manage exceptions determine the integration scope. Confirm data ownership and test cases early.

Site commissioning and support

Mapping, route validation, operator training, safety acceptance, spares and support are project activities that should be stated separately in a quote.

Questions to ask before comparing proposals.

Why is there no fixed AMR price?

The same payload class can need different load modules, sensing, fleet software, charging, integrations and site work. A useful budget is based on the actual workflow and scope rather than a bare vehicle price.

What should an AMR quote include?

Ask suppliers to separate robot hardware, top modules, fleet software, chargers, integration, commissioning, training, warranty, support and any assumptions or exclusions.

How should we evaluate payback?

Use your own baseline: completed moves, travel time, staffing allocation, operating shifts, error/rework costs and the full project cost. Model best, expected and constrained scenarios rather than assuming a universal payback period.

How can we make the first project easier to budget?

Start with one repeatable workflow, document the acceptance metrics, keep interfaces clear and validate representative loads, traffic and recovery cases before scaling.
